Heartless is a magical realism story about Mr. Bernstein, a powerful businessman, who faces an acute health condition to find out that he has in fact lost his heart. His Doctor explains him that the reason for “cardioincastratitus”, the loss of heart, is due to “a lack of emotions over an extended period of time.”
Heartless is my very first short movie and one that I hold very close to my heart. After working as an investment banker for years I came to the realization that I had lost touch with my feelings. Work had become a way to avoid any emotions that caused me discomfort. You could say that Heartless is a metaphorical reflection on my past struggles, which I believe applies to the masses of people who are chasing corporate success, ignoring the matters of the heart and the hunger of the soul.
Heartless came to life as my semester project at the New York Film Academy and was mainly filmed in Brooklyn, New York. The short film has been a festival darling and won the hearts of the viewers.
So far Heartless has won a “Best Student Short Film” award from Manhattan Film Festival, the “Best Indie Short Film” from Los Angeles Film Awards, “Best Student Short Film” silver award from Mindfield Festival and an “Award of Merit” from Best Shorts Competition. Heartless has also been officially selected by 5 other festivals and became a semi-finalist at 3 of them.
My odyssey has gifted me with a pair of glasses that lets me peak into people’s hearts. I discovered that the human heart is like a crystal that refracts light into a rainbow of colors. All the emotions we hold in there, good and bad, are in fact the colors of that rainbow - they are refractions of light which is the love itself. As a filmmaker, I intend to show people the love behind fear, love within anger, love hidden in pain so that they can reach out and claim their hearts back.
